This riff screams “Tosin Abasi” and is inspired by typical Animals As Leaders style tapping. What make’s it so interesting is the multiple melodies that are fused into one riff, due to the open strings in-between chord melodies. In progressive metal riffs you will most likely come across ‘mutated scales’ – a term I use to describe the sound you get when you base a riff around one scale but add an ‘outside note or two that is not diatonic. This brings in super interesting factors that lead to fresh new sounds. The tapping pattern takes a while to get use to but it’s all worth it.
Sticking Points:
- Tosin Abasi is the modern father of multiple string tapping.
- Try to see the 2 handed tapping riff as 2 individual parts, as this might make more sense.
- Use your middle finger for the 2 tapped notes as it has the most strength.
