Evaluating The Right Guitar Teacher

Evaluating The Right Guitar Teacher
Evaluating The Right Guitar Teacher

Let’s face it there are allot of guitar teachers out there – some good some bad and some not worth mentioning. We get a lot of enquiries here at Guitar Excellence about our pricing of our lessons and where the lessons are held. Here I will share some insights to finding and evaluating the right guitar teacher. There will be a few factors influencing your decision like location, pricing, experience, curriculum, reputation, group or private lessons and overall image of the teacher or company. Let’s have a more detailed look at each point.

Location: Is the teacher based near you or do you have to pack a snack pack for the road? Do they come to you to give the lessons?

Pricing: Do they charge per lesson or per month or per term? Do they only take cash or can you pay by EFT or debit order? Are the fees required upfront for the month? Do they require a registration fee?

Experience: How long have they been teaching for? Do they have real-world gigging experience with an actual band? (One man kamikaze karaoke or coming 156th in Idols does not qualify) Are they qualified, young, vibey and most importantly relatable?

Curriculum: Do they tailor make your lessons with notes to give you? Do they work from a course book? Do they offer tuition in your style you want to learn or is it strictly Bach?

Reputation: Do they have a professional website/a blog/ a Facebook page? Do they have testimonials? Are they referred by other people and have endorsements by music shops?

Lesson Types: Are the lessons one on one with a teacher? Are they online Skype lessons? Video guitar lessons? Are they group lessons with 50 other DKNY laced adolescents and only one teacher?

Image: Does the guitar teacher/company have a professional look? Do they have a business card? (Flannel shirt, untidy hair with an aroma of various fresh garden herbicides does not qualify)

Here is a quick summary of what most people from our over 10 years of experience are looking for when hiring a guitar teacher:

  • They come to you and give you the convenience of teaching in your own home. The days of travelling to a guitar teacher will become obsolete in the near future
  • They are cost effective and give you the best value for money in terms of tuition, experience, and convenience. Prices can range from $13 (R100 – 30-minute lesson) for an inexperienced teacher up to $75 (R600 – 60-minute lesson) for a professional. These are all prices for lessons at the teacher’s studio and does not include any additional charged for travelling to the pupils house
  • They have real world gigging experience and a minimum of two years teaching experience. A teacher that can relate and communicate with a pupil as well as have the patience to teach you at your pace
  • They teach you what you want to learn not what’s in a book – learning should be fun
  • They have a professional guitar lesson website and are not fly by nights with only free online ads and local bulletin boards. The market is flooded with fly by nights that charge professional fees – don’t get scammed. A blog and a social media presence like a Facebook page/ Twitter account is common business practice and gives them credibility and makes you feel a part of a guitar community
  • They focus on you in a one on one environment or keep the group lessons very small. The guitar lessons are prepared for you before the lesson and the guitar teacher provides you with prepared guitar sheet music
  • The lessons are consistent and your guitar teacher arrives on time. You can easily get hold of them on their mobile and email. Communication is very transparent

These factors should help you weed out the fly by nights and help you choose and evaluate the right guitar teacher or company for you.
