Guitar Backing Tracks That Teach You the Fretboard
Using interactive guitar backing tracks is one of the fastest ways to turn raw scale knowledge into real, musical solos.
My name is Kevin. I am a software developer with a passion for guitar. A couple of years ago, I searched online for simple tools to improve my understanding of scales, 3-notes-per-string (3nps) systems, and CAGED shapes. Everything out there was locked behind a paywall.
I decided to build a free solution myself. That project became Stringscales, a web app built around one core idea: generating tailored guitar backing tracks directly from the exact scale you want to practice.

Why Standard Guitar Backing Tracks Fall Short
Knowing scales by heart does not automatically make your soloing musical.
Many guitarists can run patterns up and down the neck without difficulty. However, when it comes time to improvise, it often sounds like running exercises rather than telling a story with melody.
Finding the right practice track on YouTube is hit-or-miss. Most generic searches only bring up standard A minor blues or classic rock loops. If you want to practice a specific mode, an exotic scale, or a targeted chord progression, relevant tracks are almost impossible to find.
Whether you are working through self-study or taking structured 1-on-1 guitar lessons, practicing over the correct harmonic foundation is essential.
How to Generate Guitar Backing Tracks from Any Scale
Every musical scale contains diatonic notes that naturally form specific chords. By pulling chords directly from the scale you select, software can instantly build a progression that fits your notes.
Stringscales applies standard musical movements—such as a II-V-I or I-IV-V—to those diatonic chords. This gives you a tailored backing track matching your chosen mode or position.
The built-in editor allows you to:
-
Customize chord progressions and tempo to match your practice goals.
-
Switch tunings, select left-handed mode, and adjust fret counts.
-
Isolate specific scale positions across the entire fretboard.
-
Export diagrams and scale charts for personal practice or teaching.
A Free Tool for Students and Teachers
Stringscales is completely free to use for both beginner and advanced players.
Guitar teachers can quickly create custom backing tracks, annotate specific fretboard positions, and share the interactive links directly with their students for weekly homework.
Take the tool for a spin, test out your favourite scales, and feel free to share your feedback to help improve future updates.
