Origin of Blues
Blues is a style of music that was created by African-Americans in the Southern U.S. and often expresses feelings of sadness, grief, and sorrow. A Blues song is often characterized with women, booze and how life has given you the short end of the stick. It usually consists of 12-bar phrases with 3-line stanzas and in some cases, it can also have 16 bars. This is commonly known as a I, IV, V progression for the theory nerds out there. The words of the second line usually repeat those of the first and a continual occurrence of the Blues note, the flattened fifth, used in the melody and harmony. The Blues evolved from humble beginnings to early Rock n’ Roll which spawned Elvis Presley, Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, Queen and popular contemporary artists that are on online and the airwaves today.
